EDL CRYO-CAL-2 Cryogenic Comparison Calibrator

The EDL CRYO-CAL-2 supports temperature sensor comparison calibration from cryogenic conditions to 0°C. It uses liquid nitrogen for cooling and a heated comparison block to establish the required test temperature.

EDL's current model designation is CRYO-CAL-2-LI. For an existing instrument, provide its complete model and serial number when enquiring about accessories or configuration details.

Comparison Calibration of Temperature Sensors

In a comparison calibration, the sensor under test is evaluated against a suitable calibrated reference thermometer under the same temperature conditions. The reference instrument, readout, sensor placement and stabilisation procedure all contribute to the measurement result.

Plan the calibration around the actual temperatures required in service. Include the sensor diameter, usable insertion length and required uncertainty when specifying the system.

Current CRYO-CAL-2-LI Specifications

ParameterManufacturer specification
Temperature range -196 to 0°C, approximately 77 to 273 K
Cooling medium Liquid nitrogen
Standard block Four 8 mm wells
Included sensor tubes For 0.250-inch sensor diameters
Minimum total insertion length 279.4 mm / 11 inches
Published stability over 15 minutes Less than 5 mK
Published uniformity Less than 5 mK
Controller resolution 0.1°C
Computer interface RS-232 with iTools software
Supply options 120 VAC or 240 VAC configuration

Stability and uniformity describe the calibration environment. They are separate from the complete calibration uncertainty, which also depends on the reference system and measurement procedure.

Sensor Wells, Tubes & Spacers

Match the well arrangement to the probes being calibrated. Provide the sheath diameter and available insertion length for both the reference sensor and each test sensor.

Specify how many sensors you intend to compare at once, including the reference position. Request suitable spacer tubes or guides where required, and confirm the supplied accessories in the quotation.

Preparing Your Calibration Setup

  • Test points: List the required calibration temperatures.
  • Sensor details: Include sensor type, diameter, length and quantity.
  • Reference system: Identify the reference thermometer and readout you intend to use.
  • Utilities: Specify the electrical supply and confirm access to liquid nitrogen.
  • Documentation: State the calibration certificate and reporting requirements.

Use the equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions and your site's liquid-nitrogen handling procedures.
