EDL Practi-Cal Dry Well & Surface Temperature Calibrator

The EDL Practi-Cal PRI combines dry well and surface temperature calibration in one compact instrument.

Its interchangeable calibration block allows the same unit to be configured for insertion probes or surface temperature sensors. This makes the Practi-Cal suitable for laboratory work, maintenance departments and field temperature checks where different sensor constructions are encountered.

Two models are available. The PRI-1 operates from ambient temperature to 350°C, while the PRI-2 extends the upper temperature limit to 650°C.

Dry Well and Surface Calibration in One Instrument

The Practi-Cal uses an interchangeable block system rather than limiting the instrument to one probe configuration.

For insertion sensors, a drilled dry well block provides close contact around the probe sheath. For surface probes, the system provides a uniform flat calibration surface. The calibration block can be changed when another probe diameter or calibration arrangement is required.

Insertion Temperature Sensors

Dry well inserts can be drilled to suit the dimensions of the sensors being tested. The standard arrangement accommodates multiple probes, allowing the sensor under test and a suitable reference probe to be positioned in the block at the same time.

Surface Temperature Sensors

A flat calibration surface allows the Practi-Cal to be used with contact surface probes that cannot be inserted into a conventional dry well.

Standard Dry Well Arrangement

The standard calibration block is designed to accommodate several sensors simultaneously.

PositionStandard Diameter
Sensor Wells Three × 4.75 mm (0.187") diameter sensors
Reference Well One × 6.35 mm (0.250") diameter reference sensor

Custom inserts can be produced for other probe dimensions where the standard block does not suit the required sensor.

Custom Dry Well Inserts

Custom-engineered dry well blocks are available for temperature probes with different diameters and configurations.

Depending on the operating temperature and application, inserts can be supplied in materials including:

  • Aluminium
  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Stainless steel

The well diameter should be selected according to the sensor sheath diameter while allowing sufficient clearance for safe insertion and removal.

PRI-1 Dry Well Calibrator

The PRI-1 covers temperatures from ambient to 350°C.

It uses a precision-machined aluminium block and is suited to general temperature probe calibration where the required test points remain below 350°C.

Temperature Range Ambient to 350°C
Block Material Precision-machined aluminium
Block Size 76.2 mm (3")
Weight Approx. 9.53 kg (21 lb)

PRI-2 High-Temperature Dry Well Calibrator

The PRI-2 extends the operating range from ambient temperature to 650°C.

It uses a precision-machined brass block and is intended for applications requiring calibration points above the range of the PRI-1.

Temperature Range Ambient to 650°C
Block Material Precision-machined brass
Block Size 76.2 mm (3")
Weight Approx. 13.61 kg (30 lb)

Suitable Temperature Sensors

The interchangeable calibration arrangement allows the Practi-Cal to be configured for a wide range of temperature measurement devices.

  • RTD temperature probes
  • PRTs and reference temperature probes
  • Thermocouple probes
  • Industrial insertion probes
  • Contact surface probes
  • Surface temperature sensors
  • Temperature probes with custom sheath diameters

Laboratory and Field Calibration

The compact format allows the Practi-Cal to be used as either a bench instrument or a portable calibration source.

PRI-1 weighs approximately 21 lb while PRI-2 weighs approximately 30 lb, making the system suitable for moving between calibration locations where required.

For installed temperature sensors, a portable dry well can reduce the need to remove the complete measurement system from the working area when the sensor itself can be accessed for checking.

Using an External Reference PRT

The calibration block can be configured to accommodate an independent reference PRT where a separate reference measurement is required.

When configuring the block, provide the diameter of both the sensors under test and the intended reference probe so the appropriate well arrangement can be selected.

Calibration Certificate

The Practi-Cal is supplied with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate. EDL states that its calibrators are tested for stability and uniformity before shipment.

The manufacturer's product information also states an expanded uncertainty of ±1.0°C across the complete operating range. This should be considered separately from the published instrument accuracy and uniformity specifications when defining the required calibration setup.

Typical Applications

  • Temperature calibration laboratories
  • Quality assurance and inspection
  • Plant maintenance
  • Temperature probe verification
  • Production-floor sensor checks
  • RTD and thermocouple checking
  • Surface probe calibration
  • Field calibration work
