Sato handheld refractometers for Brix and salt concentration

The Sato SK-100R series and SK-200R are portable optical refractometers for checking liquid samples. Select the instrument by its measurement scale, expected concentration and required scale division.

The SK-100R, SK-101R, SK-102R, SK-104R, SK-106R, SK-107R and SK-109R provide Brix readings across different ranges. The SK-200R provides a salt-concentration scale.

Features

  • Automatic temperature compensation: Correction within the 10 to 30°C range.
  • Optical scale: Read the boundary between the light and blue fields through the eyepiece.
  • Portable construction: Listed models weigh approximately 100 to 120 g.
  • Instrument materials: Aluminium-alloy body, optical-glass prism and polycarbonate cover plate.
  • Model-specific ranges: Options for lower and higher Brix concentrations, plus salt measurement.

Model comparison

Choose a range that covers your expected sample concentration. The smallest scale division indicates the graduation interval; it should not be treated as a statement of measurement accuracy.

Choosing the measurement scale

Brix measurement

For a sucrose-and-water solution, a Brix reading represents the sucrose concentration by mass: 10% Brix corresponds to 10 g of sucrose per 100 g of solution.

If your sample contains other dissolved substances, the Brix reading does not directly identify their concentration. Use an appropriate conversion relationship for the sample or confirm suitability before selecting the instrument.

Salt concentration

Select the SK-200R when you require the listed salt-concentration scale. Provide details of the liquid and any other dissolved materials so that suitability can be checked.

Sample and temperature considerations

  • Liquid clarity: These models require a suitable translucent sample. Opaque liquids such as milk are unsuitable.
  • Expected concentration: Include the lowest and highest readings you need to measure.
  • Temperature: Automatic compensation applies within 10 to 30°C; this is not a specification for direct measurement of hot process liquids.
  • Adjustment: Use the adjustment method and reference material specified for the selected model.
